Black Around Nails In Attic

Rust or stains around roofing nails that protrude through the attic sheathing they re supposed to stick through are a clear indication of high attic moisture.

Our example photos below show characteristic rust stains around roofing nails in a poorly vented attic below left and the absence of those stains around roofing nails in a well ventilated attic below right. So likely the nails are very cold in winter and warm air in attic condenses around that.
